Week 1 of 12
Children need to recognize and work with sounds in spoken words as they develop early reading skills.
Say a word such as sun. Ask your child to identify the first sound. You can also practice rhyming words and clapping the syllables in names.
Week 2 of 12
Phonics helps children connect letters with sounds so they can read unfamiliar words.
Choose a simple word such as ship. Help your child identify the sounds represented by the letters and read the word. Encourage your child to blend the sounds.
Week 3 of 12
Reading fluency is more than reading quickly! Fluent reading includes accuracy, an appropriate pace, and expression.
Read a short passage aloud to your child. Then invite your child to reread it, focusing on reading the words correctly and making the sentences sound natural.

A strong vocabulary helps children understand what they read, express their ideas, and make connections between words and concepts.
Choose one new word from a book or conversation. Explain its meaning, use it in a sentence, and encourage your child to use it throughout the day.

Reading is not just saying the words on a page. Children also need to understand and think about what they read.
After reading a story, ask your child:

The main idea tells what a text is mostly about. Supporting details provide information that helps explain or develop that main idea.
After reading a short passage, ask, “What is this mostly about?” Then ask your child to name two details that support the answer.

Sometimes authors do not tell us everything directly. Readers use clues from the text and what they already know to make inferences.
If a story says, “Luis grabbed his umbrella and hurried outside as dark clouds filled the sky,” ask, “What do you think the weather might be like? What clues helped you decide?”
Week 8 of 12
As children move into the upper elementary grades, they encounter longer and more complex words. Learning to recognize syllable patterns and break words into parts can support reading and spelling.
Practice a word such as sunset. Say the word, clap its two syllables, and blend the parts back together. As your child progresses, try longer words.
Week 9 of 12
Reading with expression helps children communicate meaning. Punctuation, phrasing, and changes in voice can make a text easier to follow and more enjoyable.
Read a short dialogue between two characters. Model how your voice changes for a question, an exclamation, or a statement. Then let your child try!

Young readers benefit from understanding how print works, including recognizing letters and words, noticing punctuation, and following the direction of text.
While reading together, point out a word, a capital letter, or a period. Ask your child to show you where the sentence begins and ends.
Week 11 of 12
Reading together gives children opportunities to hear fluent reading, learn new words, ask questions, and discuss ideas.
Set aside a regular time to read with your child. Let your child choose an interesting book when possible. Pause occasionally to talk about the story and encourage questions.
Week 12 of 12
Reading skills build on one another. Phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension all contribute to a child's reading development.
Celebrate your child's progress! Recognize new words, improved accuracy, thoughtful answers, and the willingness to try a challenging passage.
